Plot Overview

The story is set in a rented bungalow where a group of jobless friends are trying to kill boredom. One of them, Manu (played by Shreyas Talpade), introduces the group to a homemade Ouija board made from a carom board. What starts off as a joke turns serious when they accidentally summon a spirit named Anamika. Things go from weird to wild as more people start seeking help from the spirit for answers to their real-life problems.

Their house turns into a supernatural consultation hub, and everything becomes more chaotic with the arrival of Kabir (Tusshar Kapoor), an old friend of Manu. What follows is a rollercoaster of spooky moments and awkward laughter.

Cast Performances

Shreyas Talpade delivers his trademark comic timing and shines in his role as Manu. Tusshar Kapoor as Kabir brings in some energy, but the script limits his full potential. Their chemistry, previously seen in other comedy films, gives the film some spark.

Siddhi Idnani and Sonia Rathee do a decent job, but their characters lack depth. The supporting cast, including Jay Thakkar and Abhishek Kumar, tries hard to keep things entertaining, but the writing doesn’t give them much to work with.

Direction and Technical Aspects

Director Sangeeth Sivan, known for handling comedy-horror themes, tries to recreate that magic here. Unfortunately, the balance between horror and humor doesn’t land smoothly. Some scenes feel dragged, and others switch tones too abruptly.

Cinematography by Deep Sawant adds a spooky vibe, and Ajay Jayanthi’s background score is suitable for the theme. However, the editing could’ve been much sharper, as the pacing often feels off.

Reviews and Ratings

Critics had mixed to negative reactions. Some felt that Tusshar Kapoor and Shreyas Talpade were the only saving grace. Others pointed out that the film is neither scary nor truly funny. The script and direction were the major weak points.

Most popular websites gave it average ratings:

  • Times of India rated it 3 out of 5
  • Filmfare mentioned the film is carried by its cast but dragged down by the screenplay
  • Rediff felt it lacked originality, especially when compared to the original Malayalam version

Public Response

The public felt that the film did not live up to expectations. Many viewers online said the comedy felt forced, and the horror elements were not scary at all. While some liked seeing Tusshar and Shreyas back together, the script didn’t give them enough to work with.

Fans of the original Romancham were especially disappointed, stating that Kapkapiii misses the soul and fun of the original.

Final Verdict

Kapkapiii tries to be a spooky comedy, but it ends up being neither spooky nor consistently funny. It has a decent cast, but they’re stuck with a weak script and average direction. Unless you’re a hardcore fan of Tusshar Kapoor or Shreyas Talpade, this one might be a skip.

If you’re into light horror-comedy, give it a watch once, but don’t expect anything mind-blowing. For better laughs and scares, you might want to go back to the original Malayalam version.
